Driving Traffic
In the classic days of the movies, the job of the marketer was to get people in the theatre seats. The more people in the seats, the more the theatre made, the more the movie studio made and the more the actors, directors, etc. made.
Your job is to get eyeballs to your site. And not just any eyeballs. The audience for Gone With the Wind is going to be filled with very different people from the audience for Frankenstein Vs. the Werewolf. You have to get people to see your site who are interested in your subject. It’s even better if they aren’t only interested, they are willing to pay for the information, products or services you have. This is called “targeted traffic”.
You may not be surprised to hear that everything starts on your blog. Of course, the keywords you use with your blog are the main way to get traffic. We’ve talked about keywords in several of the scenes and we recommend you continually refer back to that. We both still do lots of keyword research with every blog post, article, product, etc.
As we also mentioned, once you write your blog posts, turn those posts into articles to submit to the article directories right away, and then repurpose the same information by using it in a short report. There are other things you can also do with your blog post content, which we will list below. Once you have written your content it can be used over and over again to increase your traffic and help your prospects to find you more quickly.
The purpose of using these techniques is to build up the value of the blog or website you are driving traffic to, making it more relevant in the eyes of the search engines. Spend some time every day taking action with what we are teaching you here and you will have as much traffic as you want. Spend more time, teach others to do these things for you, and you will increase the ranking of your sites even more. This is worthwhile to your bottom line!
There is more here than you can do in a week. There is more here than you can do in a month, and even we don’t use each of these techniques regularly. We recommend you go through the list below and choose several that you like. Challenge yourself to add one new traffic technique each week, and then evaluate your results. Generating traffic is more of an art than a science, but each one of these works extremely well to drive massive amounts of targeted traffic to your sites. Over time you will experience the snowball effect, and finally you will have more prospects and clients than you ever imagined possible.

Even though this lesson is aimed at getting massive traffic to your sites, we’ve also included techniques for list building. Traffic generation and list building are intertwined, so be sure to take full advantage of this additional information.
Here are 32 targeted traffic techniques to bring you more prospects, more profit, and more visibility than you ever could have imagined. Most of these are 100% free, and the other few that aren’t include some options that cost from $17 to $47. All in all, this is a course of action that can take you from where you are to where you want to be in the next 30 days.
A lot of these we have already covered and you are already doing, but we list them here so you can start to see how everything begins to tie together.
1. Comment on related blogs – Go to https://technorati.com/ and search for blogs on your topic. Technorati is the world’s largest blog directory. You can claim your blog there so it will be more easily found for your keywords. Then find other blogs in your niche, follow and subscribe to them, and leave appropriate comments on the posts you know something about. Be a useful and helpful part of the conversation and readers will follow you back to your blog and subscribe. For lists of blogs with ‘dofollow’ (do follow is the absence of a nofollow tag, allowing the backlinks from your comment to be indexed by the search engines) links, go to http://dofollowblogslist.info/, http://www.dofollowblogslist.com/, and http://www.blogsthatfollow.com.
2. Create a viral product – In scene 8 we talked about short reports. Continue doing that. (It’s not a one-time thing!) Briefly, write a short report that can be given away to your list, to your Twitter followers, in forums, and on Facebook. An example of this technique being used successfully is a report written by a group of people who have become experts on building Squidoo lenses. You can download a copy to learn more about Squidoo and to see how a report can go viral by going to http://MakeTechnologySimple.com/squidoosteps.pdf.
3. Your Autoresponders – You already have your autoresponder series started. Many of us forget the power of autoresponders in sending targeted traffic to your sites. In your emails to your list, give them a link to your site where they can read your blog post and leave a comment. You will find that many people on your list do not realize you have a blog, or if they do they have not been there for quite a long time. By reminding them of what you have written you are sending more traffic to your sites and will have a better opportunity to monetize this traffic over time.

4. Write for someone else’s newsletter – I write for two online newsletters andone offline newsletter that is not available online. You can get started with this by starting your own newsletter and asking others to contribute an article. In a short time you will gain a reputation for being someone who is willing to provide content on a regular basis. If they do not ask for exclusivity you can repurpose these articles into blog posts, articles to be submitted to directories, short reports, and more.
5. Guest blogger – Many bloggers are regularly searching for people to provide a guest post for their blog. Marketer Nicole Dean created a $17 product that shows you exactly how to find blogs to write guest posts for and how to do your own ‘blog tour’. Check out her information at http://GuestBloggingSecrets.com.
6. Blog – As we said, everything centers around your blog, which I refer to as your home on the internet. Check out http://www.dailyblogtips.com/ping-list/ to learn more about ‘pinging’ your blog to let more sites know what you are doing. Post to your blog at least twice each week for best results.
7. Write about the “gurus” – Connie learned this by writing about what she was doing at several live events. My posts came up in the search engines under the person’s name, driving more traffic to my blog and getting my name known even faster. She usually always write about these people in regards to a program they have to offer, so she make more affiliate sales as well.
8. RSS feed – Check out http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-graphics.htm – If you are using WordPress you automatically have an RSS feed. Go over to Feedburner (http://feedburner.com) and set up a free account to manage them. Sometimes people will subscribe to your feed without joining your list. This still gives you an opportunity to connect with them as they check your feed to see what’s new on your blog.
9. Forums – These can really eat up your time, so find one or two and get to know the people there. There are free and paid forums. For a free one, we both like marketer Pat O’Bryan’s forum at http://MilagroWorld.com/forums/. The best paid one is the NAMS forum at http://YourNams.com. If you’re slightly more advanced, check out Dennis Becker’s paid forum at http://ConnieLoves.me/Earn1KaDay. In the beginning, spend some time reading other people’s posts before you do. This is referred to as “lurking” and will let you see what others are doing and saying before you jump in. Once you start to comment you will find loyal friends and followers you never knew existed in cyberspace. Set a timer so you don’t spend too much time in any forum. The traffic and connections are worth budgeting time to develop.

One important thing to know about forums: It is considered “bad form” in most forums to make posts that are blatant advertising Give good information in your posts. In most forums, they not only allow but encourage you to put a link back to your site in your “signature” file, which is what appears at the bottom of each post. As you interact with people and they start to get to know and trust you, they will click on those links to see what else you have to offer.
10. Amazon book reviews – You must be a customer of Amazon, meaning that you have ordered one book or other product from them in the past. Search for books on your niche topic and find the ones that you have read. Write a short review of the book – about 150 to 200 words is enough – and it will be added. Readers can then read your review and see your profile to find out where they can reach you. This is a way to show prospective clients and customers that you are knowledgeable on the topic and have something more to offer them.
11. Flickr.com and PhotoBucket – These photo sites allow you to upload your pictures and share them in various ways. A pictures can be worth a thousand words, but it can also be worth a thousand visitors.
12. Product or Site Reviews – Choose any product, course, site, or seminar you have personal experience with and write a review of it on your blog. (Do you get the idea that your blog is really important?) When people search for more information they will find your post, with your affiliate link, and you will be amazed at the results. (See #32 below for an example of this.)
13. Video – There are many video sites such as http://YouTube.com, http://vimeo.com, http://Animoto.com and others. Experiment with these sites to see what works best for you. A simple video made with a smart phone and uploaded to YouTube can be very powerful. Keep it simple in the beginning and then expand over time. When you upload your video, use the main keyword you want to have people find you with in the title of the video and in the description. (And, don’t forget, in the “keyword” section. You’d be surprised how many people forget to put it there, too!) Be sure to put a link back to your site in the description, fairly high so people don’t have to click “more information” to see it. Video is one of the best ways to drive targeted traffic to your sites.
14. Radio Interviews – Sign up for a free account at http://blogtalkradio.com/. You can also start a free blog there, as well as turn your recordings into podcasts on iTunes. This site is excellent for getting you more targeted traffic and for SEO. Do one 15 minute segment each week and see what happens. It is also excellent practice and experience with interviewing and being interviewed.

15. Press Releases – Don’t be afraid to send a press release for every little thing you do, such as starting a new blog, creating a new product, or reaching a milestone on Twitter. Two good free press release sites are http://pr.com and http://free-press-release.com. You can also use http://webwire.com to send press releases for $19.95. These reach a wider audience of targeted prospects and stay around on the Internet much longer than the free ones. Start with the free sites and then decide when you may want to have one that will be even more effective.
16. Contest or Challenge – Connie did this regularly with her 30 day blogging challenges and her 30 day productivity challenges. During that time she has a huge boost in traffic and add new people to her list as well. You can have your own contest or challenge to build excitement for what you are doing online. And the more people you get to participate in your challenge, the more they will all drive traffic to each other
17. Keyword rich domains – We talked about this in depth in the first few lessons, but list it here as a reminder.
18. Affiliate marketing – We talked about this in scenes 10 and 11, so you should be fairly familiar with it by now. You should also start your own affiliate program as soon as you have a product. Affiliates will drive traffic to your sites because they are motivated to earn commission from you.
19. Give testimonials – providing a results based testimonial for a product you have used and love will bring you targeted traffic for as long as it stays up online. We both have testimonials on many different sites and they keep bringing in traffic.
20. Article Marketing – Scene 4 was all about this. Go take a look at that one again to refresh your memory.
21. Google profile – Set up your profile here so that people can easily find out who you are and what you do. This will bring you more traffic as people find out more about you than they would my simply reading your Facebook or Twitter profile. http://www.google.com/profiles
22. Facebook – Regularly update your status to let people know what you have to offer. You can use http://ping.fm to connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as some other social media. This saves time and spreads your message out to even more sites.
23. Facebook Fan Page – It’s really easy to create a fan page and every business should have one. They not only get indexed by the search engines, people find them when searching from within Facebook. You can link back to your site or blog and can connect your blog so every new post gets listed on your fan page using Networked Blogs. (Search for it in Facebook.)

24. Twitter profile – Go to the “Settings” tab at the top of your page on Twitter and fill it out completely. Make sure the link to your site takes them to a page where they can opt in to your list.
25. LinkedIn events and questions – Set up a profile on LinkedIn and connect with both of us, Connie Ragen Green and Geoff Hoff, right away. We are now well-connected there, so you can see what we are doing. We accept all connections and ask and answer questions. Once you are there, you can create events each month to promote one of one of your webinars, teleseminars, or a live event. (We haven’t gone over teleseminars, yet, but will soon.) This takes very little time and can work extremely well at positioning you as an expert. There is great potential for massive targeted traffic to reach your sites through your connections here.
26. Yahoo Answers – Go over to http://answers.yahoo.com/info/welcome to find out more about how this site works. There are 90 million users worldwide, and over 20 million in the United States. This is a knowledge sharing community where you can answer questions on your area of expertise and stand out from the crowd very quickly.
27. Stumble Upon – http://www.stumbleupon.com/ – is a social website which allows its users a new way to experience the Internet. Instead of searching for specific items on search engines like Google, Stumble Upon users only have to tag specific personal or professional interests and then ‘channel surf’ the web by simply clicking on a button on the Stumble Upon tool bar.
Upon doing so, you will be randomly directed to specific websites which match your lists of interests. You can then choose to tag the webpage you’re on or give it a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ to indicate if you want to see it again. You can also use the Stumble Upon toolbar as a form of social bookmarking. By surfing the web and tagging or submitting specific websites, each user can keep track of which websites they like and share them with others.
28. Digg – http://digg.com/ is a social news site where you can discover and vote for blog posts you like. A vote on Digg can bring you a rush of targeted traffic very quickly.

Page 6

29. Del.icio.us – http://delicious.com/ is a social bookmarking site. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3615 to add this to your Firefox browser. This site, along with Digg and StumbleUpon, make it much easier to let the world know what you are doing and get massive traffic to your sites.
30. Squidoo – This is a site started by marketer Seth Godin to help you get your message out to the world. Your pages are referred to as “lenses” and you have your choice of many “modules” that you can include. This site does not rank as highly as it once did, but it is still an excellent way to add content and optimize for your keywords. We already gave you a link to a report on Squidoo earlier, but here it is again:
http://MakeTechnologySimple.com/squidoosteps.pdf.
31. HubPages.com – HubPages are part of a web 2.0 community that started in 2006. You are able to set up your own Hubpages and benefit from the SEO by strategically placing backlinks to your sites. You can add “capsules” that include links to Amazon, eBay, videos, photos, and more to your HubPage.
32. Weebly.com – Weebly is another site that allows you to place backlinks and use your keywords to increase the ranking of your sites and use SEO. You can add YouTube videos, a photo gallery, a Flickr Slideshow, and more to your Weebly page. There is a helpful review of Weebly at http://www.timpeter.com/blog/2009/10/29/taking-a-look-at-weebly-the-thinks-website-hosting-tools-review/ (this is also an example of how a site review will get you more traffic)
Now that’s a huge list. You won’t be able to do all of these in the next week. You may not ever do all of these. However, read over the list again and choose at least three of these techniques (ones that you haven’t already done in previous scenes! The idea is to get MORE traffic) and put them into action.
