Building Your List
What Is a List?
In the days before the Internet, businesses relied on their mailing list to send promotions to their customers and prospects. It was also a way to keep in touch with their people, with information about their business and support for using the products their people had purchased. People got on those mailing lists by ordering catalogues, magazines and newspapers and for sending in those offers in the backs of magazines advertising “get this free pamphlet with ten tricks you never thought of to get the very best celebrity autographs!” In stores, they would sign up for the store’s newsletter, or for the chance to win a free dinner or night out at the movies.
The old cliché was that “The Money’s In The List.” That’s still true now on the Internet.
However, now on the Internet, the list is an email list.
The people on your list are your main audience. A well developed list can be like a huge fan club, full of people clamoring for your next move. You need that audience. No matter how good your movie is, if no one goes to see it, it doesn’t do much good.
In short, the people on your list are the main people who will buy your stuff!
Over the next three scenes, we’ll learn a lot about lists, it’s that important to your business. This week we’ll talk about building your list. Next week, we’ll discuss “Opt-In Pages”, which are pages on your website that have no other purpose than to gather those ever important names and email addresses. The week after that, we’ll go into communicating with your list once you begin to grow it.
So, let’s begin our audience development…

Create Something of Value to Give Away
Way back in the thirties and forties, almost everyone saw almost every movie. The studios didn’t need to work very hard to bring the names of the movies to the public’s attention. During the sixties, when there were only three television networks and PBS, most people at least knew about every show that was on. There are so many options, now, this is no longer the case.
When people first started marketing online, all you needed to do to get people to join your list was to say, “Sign up for my newsletter.” That no longer works. Why? There are too many options, just like with television and movies. Back then, people were excited when they got an email. Now, they get so many, they’re overwhelmed and there has to be a very good reason for them to want to get one more.
You have to give them that reason. How? Give away something of value in exchange for that very valuable name and email address. They call that an “ethical bribe”. What do you give away? Well, we’ve been getting ready for this for a while. Last week, you learned all about Short Reports. A short report is a perfect thing to give away. It is filled with good information that people want.
In earlier scenes, we talked about how to write your short report using PLR and Public Domain content. You can also include a couple of articles from the article directories such as eZine Articles (as long as you don’t alter that content and include the author’s resource boxes.)
You can also reuse stuff you’ve already written. There is a blogger named Hugh MacLeod. Several years ago, he wrote a series of posts about creativity on his blog “gapingvoid” at http://gapingvoid.com/. He decided to compile them into a small eBook and give it away. With that eBook, he built a list of thousands of people. And it was content they could have gotten right there on the blog if they wanted to look, but it was more convenient to get it in a downloadable book. He gave that report away for many years and has a huge following. He then wrote a report on how he did that and gave that report away for a long time. (He now gives other things away, but what a great start!)

The point is that, as you add content to your blog, you may notice that you already have stuff you can repackage (also referred to as repurposing ) as your giveaway. There are several other things you could give away, of course, a free tele-class, a video or audio recording, but we will concentrate on a short eBook or report that people can download.
Now that you have an idea what to give away, let’s look at how you get people’s information…

Set Up an Optin Box
What is an optin box? They are those forms you see on almost every website where you put in your name and email address to join someone’s list. And it’s really easy to get one on your site. What do you need?
The first thing you need is an email autoresponder service. That is simply a service that helps you manage your list of names and addresses, allows you to create different “lists” that you can have people sign up to and allows you to send out emails to your list or lists either at a specific time (a “broadcast”) or automatically, a set period of time after the person signs up (an “autoresponder” or “follow up ”.)
There are many such services, but we recommend two, Aweber and 1ShoppingCart. Let’s talk about the pros and cons of both.
Aweber – This is a very simple and affordable choice. It is very easy to use and has some very nice features, including lots of very attractive “optin boxes” that you can choose from. The main drawback with this service is that it only handles email lists. If you are going to be creating your own products, you will need a way to process your payments and keep track of your customers. While you can tie your Aweber to your PayPal account, that will only work while your business is fairly small.

1ShoppingCart – This is a much more robust service that handles your shopping cart, which manages products, customers, payments, etc. It is a bit more expensive than Aweber because it does so much more. One of the drawbacks, though, is that the “optin forms” you create there are very generic and simple looking. However, if you know you are going to have many products that you create yourself, it might be better to start here rather than with Aweber. (Also, once you have many products in place and want to get affiliates to sell your stuff, you can upgrade and use 1ShoppingCart to manage your affiliate program.)

Once you have decided on which service to use, go in and set up your first list. Once you do that, you will be able to get the form code to put on your site. Next week, we’ll talk about optin pages, but for now, we’ll just put the form on our blog. (Every blog should have an opt in for a free giveaway!)
To put the form on your blog, in your WordPress admin area, go to “Appearance”, then “Widgets”. Drag a “Text Widget” to the sidebar. Paste the code you got from your service into that widget and save. Then go look at the site to see how it looks.
Above the form should be some compelling text to get them to want your giveaway.
Something like, “Get Your FREE List of the Top 100 Best Movies of All Time!”
In Aweber, when you create the form, you can put that right in the form itself. With 1ShoppingCart, put it above your form code in the text widget.
You now have to let the people know how to get their free gift…

Putting Your Giveaway Online
The easiest way to upload your eBook is to put it in the “Media Directory” of your WordPress site. To do that…
1. In your admin area, go to “Media”, then “Add New”. Click on the icon to upload your eBook, then browse to find it on your local computer. Once you upload it, there will be a field that says, “File URL”. Copy what’s in that field. It will look something like this:
http://yoursite.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/yourbook.pdf
2. Go back to your email service and create the first follow up email for your list, welcoming them and giving them that link to the download. Have that email go out on “Day 0″ which means it will go out immediately after they have signed up for your list.
Congratulations, you now have a free giveaway, a list, and an autoresponder service!
There are, of course, other ways to build your list, other than with your blog’s optin box…

Other Ways to Build Your List
Most of these techniques are a little advanced and you will need to know how to set up an optin page for them (you’ll learn that next week!), but we wanted to give you an idea of what else you can do to build your list.
Group Giveaways
You may have seen some of these. They are done in many niches, so keep your eye out for them. They are usually for a limited time only. Someone organizes a bunch of people to each list a free giveaway on one page. Then everyone sends out emails telling people they can get a bunch of free stuff. Everyone goes there, clicks on the things they want and has to sign up for each one. You get people from many other lists signing up for yours.
Giveaway Series
This is a very powerful way to get new people on your list. You will have to have many free giveaways for this to work. People sign up to get “a gift a day” or “a gift a week” for a certain amount of time. Once they sign up, they get put on a follow up series that sends them an email every day or every week with the link to the next gift.
Here is an example of one of these that we did:
http://SuperSummerGiveaway.com
That’s just a few examples of how you can grow your list. With a bit of imagination, you can probably think of many more. But you need to have a list to get started!

We will learn all about building your list. (Don’t worry if you don’t even know what a list is, we will cover that.)
