PLR – Private Label Rights

Think of Gone With the Wind, based on Margaret Mitchell’s classic novel. Or Batman based on the comic book. We can do that with our online business, too!

What is PLR?

PLR means “Private Label Rights”. To give you an example from the real world, it’s like when your local store puts their label on a box of soap. They don’t actually make the soap;they “ license” it from another company with the rights to put their own name on it. Private Label Rights packages are written by professional writers and then extensively edited so they are well put together, accurate and very well written. Because of the way they are put together and sold, you can often get a whole package of articles for well under $10 or $20 with really good content in them, and you can find them in almost any niche.

The packages are either eBooks, a group of articles, even PowerPoint presentations and graphic sets. We have even seen PLR videos and audios that you can customize and put your own name on.

Most reputable PLR companies limit the number of any package they sell so that you won’t be competing against a million people who are using the same package. Now let’s get into the nitty -gritty…

What can you do with PLR packages?

The main thing we will be focusing on today is using them for blog posts, but there are many ways you could use them in your business.

For instance:

1. 1. In Newsletters
   2. In eCourses – either free or paid (package several PLR articles together as a course or eBook that you can sell!)
   3. Record them as a podcast
   4. Create special reports to get people on your list

What can you do with PLR packages?

There are only a few restrictions on how you can use PLR, but they are important to know.

1. You cannot use them in PLR packages that you are selling to other people – those would have to be original content. If you want to sell PLR to other people, hire your own writers or write it yourself, or purchase the Resell Rights to the PLR you purchase, if that’s an option.

2. You cannot use them on the article directories such as eZine articles – they also insist on original content. That makes sense. The article directories want unique content, and if people used PLR there, the articles would be duplicates, which would drastically diminish the value of the whole site.

3. Although you used to be able to use PLR articles as the basis for Kindle books or physical books published on Amazon through their CreateSpace service, Amazon no longer accepts them. You can use them as a basis for your book, but you must re-write pretty much everything for it to be used in either service.

Now that you know what you can and can’t do with them, let’s learn…

How do you use your PLR packages?

The first thing you should do is actually open them up. Many people buy them, then let them sit on their computer, which does no one any good. Once you have actually opened and read the content, it’s time to customize it a bit. 

The first thing to consider is the title. You know what key words you are focusing on, so change (or at least adjust) the title of the article to something with one of your main key words. Then you want to tweak the actual content. Make it more in your voice. Add some additional information. If you’ve purchased the PLR content for a blog in your niche, you probably know a lot about the subject. Even though the PLR packages are usually very well researched and well written, chances are you have information on the subject they didn’t have or include, especially since this is your own niche!

Include links to your own sites or affiliate products you are promoting that are relevant to the subject matter. Don’t just “rewrite”. Have a thought to improve what’s there. Your own voice and experience will make a big difference. For instance, if you add examples from your life or the life of those around you to make it unique to you. No one else who has purchased that same PLR package will have that same article on their blog, because they can’t know your experience.

Think of it as two different actors playing the same role. Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale have all played Batman, but each actor made the character completely their own!

One way to make your version of the PLR articles unique is to add quotes from famous people or add thoughts or comments from customers, friends and family. Now that we’ve rewritten our PLR article…

How do you use it on your blog?

As we said above, there are many ways to use PLR, but we are focusing at this point in your learning on blog content. Once you go further in the program, you will see how you can come back to this to use the same techniques we discuss here to make eBooks, short reports, etc.

As for your blog, though, when you purchase a PLR package, there are usually several articles in it. Take each one and customize it as we discussed above, than make each a post on your blog. But DON’T PUBLISH them right away!

Save each one of them as a draft. Why?

As you get into the rhythm of posting on a regular schedule, you will no doubt come up against days when you don’t have an idea or don’t have the time to write a full blog post. On those days, go to one of your drafts and publish it. This way, you reduce the pressure on yourself to produce your content, you have more content to provide to your readers (and the search engines!) and you still mostly have your own original content on your blog.

This is all well and good, but now we want to know…

How to find good PLR content?

First of all, make sure the company you’re buying from has a good reputation. Find out from friends and fellow marketers where they like to get their PLR. If you find a company that seems good, buy one package from them and if it is good quality, go back for more. There are several different people we have used and can recommend:

Action Steps

Check out several of the PLR sites and find at least one package in your niche that you can buy.

Buy it. (If you find a few good ones, get more than one!)

Open the PLR package up and read it.

Turn at least two of the articles included in your package into blog posts. You really can do more than two, but do at least that many.

Post those two as “drafts” to your blog to be used at a future date.
