Posting to Your Blog

Now it’s time to write our script! Here is where we get creative! We are going to post to our blog.

This is going to be a fairly short lesson, but there are daily tasks for this week. So, without further ado…

The History of Blogs

Before we start with what to post on you blog, let us give you a brief history of what blogs are and where they came from. The term “Blog” is a shortening of “Weblog”. Weblogs were personal pages where people posted personal diaries for their friends and family to read, a sort of log of their life. At the beginning, they were fairly selfindulgent.

Eventually, people started writing programs to make it easier to post to their weblogs. They were still fairly self-indulgent, but were starting to at least look a bit better. Slowly, the weblogs (already starting to be called “Blogs” by this point) were being used to post political and opinion pieces. This process has gone a long way to completely changing the way print journalism is now done!

Then, artists, crafts-people and business people realized their power for staying in touch with their audience. By then, there were a few free services that would host your blog, and a few free programs that, like WordPress, you could use to put your blog on your own page.

Now that we know a bit about where they came from, let’s talk about what they’re for. Blogs, put very simply, are for content. This sounds silly to say, but it’s the truth. Giving information is the main way we will be dealing with our blogs. Yes, some people still use them to journal, and many people still use them for political and opinion writing, but for the purposes of building our business, our blog will be filled with information.

So how do we get that information? Where do we find it?

In this lesson, we’ll discuss creating your own content, which is very important. In other lessons, we’ll look at where to find stuff that’s already written. Yes, sort of like, “This screenplay is based on a novel”!

Geoff is an expert on creativity, so we’ll start there. Don’t think you’re creative?

Yes, you are creative!

Everybody is. All you have to do to prove it to yourself is to imagine squeezing a fresh lemon into your mouth. You can’t help but pucker and your mouth will water a bit. This is creating something out of nothing, something that has an actual, physical affect on you.

See? You are creative.

Before we get started, let’s strengthen our muscles. You wouldn’t expect a stunt man to come to the set without stretching and working out a bit, first, would you? But how do we stretch and strengthen our creativity?

Creativity is simply our ability to communicate with our subconscious mind. We all have that ability, but for some it is stronger than for others. It’s easy to strengthen it. First, know that you have been feeding your subconscious mind information your entire life and it is really eager to give some of that information back to you, but in new and interesting ways.

Stream of Consciousness

The easiest way to strengthen your communication with the subconscious is to do “stream-of-consciousness” writing. Every morning, sit down and write for three minutes or so. Don’t figure out what to write, don’t worry if it even makes any sense. It probably won’t. Just write what’s in your head. Even if it’s simply, “This is a stupid exercise. I hate this. Nothing is happening. This is the most boring thing I’ve ever done.” Do that for three minutes every morning for several mornings.

Even if you write that sort of thing for your entire three minutes for the first day or so, I guarantee that you will start noticing odd and interesting ideas appear on your page that you didn’t expect or plan on. This is the subconscious mind waking up, stretching and flexing its muscles. Go with it!

Okay, so now, how do you create a blog post?

The first step is finding ideas to write about. If you don’t already have subjects to base posts on, there are several places you can find ideas. One great way is to find the questions people are asking in your niche and answer them in your blog posts.

Any place in your niche where people ask questions is a great place to hang out.

Are there blogs you can read where people ask questions in the comments?

Make a brief answer in those comments, and then expand that answer into a whole blog post. To find blogs in your niche, type blog:your niche in Google. For instance, if your niche is Poodle Dog Walking, type blog:poodle dog walking there are any blogs dedicated to your niche, they will show up.

Forums are also a great place to find questions to answer. Often, in forums, you will see the same question asked in several different ways. You will also see many answers, some you can expand upon, some you can contradict. Use those discussions as a jumping off place for blog posts. Again, to find forums, type forums:your niche in Google.

Speaking of discussions, what about the discussions you’ve had or read on Twitter and Facebook? They are great starting off points. Take some of your thoughts from those discussions, put them together, expand on them and you have a readymade post.

When someone comments on your blog, again, answer them in a comment, but expand upon it in a whole post.

One place people rarely think to search for ideas is on Amazon. Find books in your niche and look at the reviews of them. They will often have thoughts or questions that you have the answers to. Write posts about that.

And finally, look at what you are doing in your life. Don’t necessarily write what would be a diary entry, but put a spin on what’s going on in your daily life that makes it relate to your niche.

Your first few blog posts may not be brilliant. Don’t worry about that. As you get in the habit of writing, they will get better and, eventually, you will look back and be surprised at both how good you’re getting at it and how much you’ve written. And the more you write, the more the search engines will love you. Which means the more people will find you.

How long should your blog posts be? Abe Lincoln once said a man’s legs should only be long enough so his feet touch the floor. Your blog posts should be long enough to give the information you’re writing about. They can be as short as 100 words. More often, though, 400 to 500 words is a good length. Don’t stress out too much, especially at first. Just get them written!

A word about blog comments.

The comments on your blog are very important. One of the main reasons you are keeping a blog is to be in relationship with your readers. A very easy way to do this is to encourage your readers to leave comments and to answer the comments that come in. Besides what we mentioned above about those answers being great places for new  post subjects, it also shows your readers that you are engaged, that you do value them. And, of course, that you have great information for them.

Also, if people know you answer your comments, they will be more likely to come back to your site!

Action Steps

Do the stream of consciousness exercise every day for at least a week Hang out where people in your niche are hanging out and see what questions they are asking. Do this at least once a day this week. Keep a record of those questions as possible blog post ideas (Reminder: Blogs, Forums, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

Write at least three blog posts this week! This is important. Don’t worry about quality at this point. Just start writing so that you can ‘find your voice’ and get into the habit of writing on a regular basis.

Next week we look at article marketing.
