Autoresponsers

Over the last several weeks, we’ve been talking about different aspects of your email list. Now that you have your autoresponder service, you have an optin box on your blog and you have an optin page, it’s time to start thinking about what you want to say to the people on your list.

There are two types of emails that you can send out from Aweber and 1ShoppingCart. One is called a Broadcast and the other is called an Autoresponder. (Aweber calls these “Follow-ups”.)

We’ll start with…

Broadcasts

A broadcast is simply an email that you send to everyone on a list. You “broadcast” the message at a specific time, just like a TV show is broadcast to its viewers at a specific time. If you have several different lists in your email service (as your business grows, it’s a good idea to have many lists), you can send a broadcast to as many or as few of those lists as you want.

A broadcast is an email you send out once. They are for date specific issues, such as letting your people know about a new blog post or the launch of a new product, etc. It is a good idea to send a broadcast out at least once a week so the people who have signed up don’t forget who you are. We both send broadcasts almost every day.

People often ask how big their list should be before they start mailing to them and promoting stuff. The best answer is as soon as you have someone on your list that isn’t your mother or your best friend.

No one on your list knows how many other people there are on the list. As far as they are concerned, you may have one person or 10,000 people. They are only concerned with what you have to offer them, in terms of great information and offers they can benefit from. Because of that, a good mix of content in your broadcasts is a good idea.

Give them some great information. Make them offers to buy your products or affiliate products. Send them links to new blog posts or articles you’ve published.

One final thing about sending emails from your service: You may have noticed that many marketers have email with fairly short lines. This makes it much easier to read then with personal emails that run all the way across the page.

Here is an example:

Again I have been asked whether or not it is now too late to get started online and build a profitable
business. I have written a post on this I would like for you to read at:

http://www.hugeprofitstinylist.com/too-late-get-started-online

There is a window of opportunity for most everything in life, and this may be no different. Please read and comment on how I feel about this topic. I have strong opinions on this, as I do with many things!

While you are at my site, be sure to grab your free subscription to my podcast series. It’s on the righthand side and says ‘iTunes Podcasts’.

To Your Massive Online Success,

You can either manually break your lines by hitting “enter”, or you can use one of the free services that will do it for you. One we recommend is found at http://formatit.com – once you’ve written out your email in your word processor, paste it into that screen, tell it how long you want the lines to be (Connie uses around 30 characters, Geoff uses around 50), then submit. It will format it for you.

Note that you don’t break up any web addresses. If you do, when people click on them, They won’t work. (The “Format It” site knows this, so you don’t have to worry.)

Now let’s look at the other option…

Autoresponders

Once someone has signed up for your free giveaway, you should have several emails already in the queue that get sent out a set number of days from the day they signed up. The way we both do it is with a series of ten emails going out over ten days. Once you’ve put that many in your autoresponder (or follow -up) series, many people expand that to a couple a week for the next several months, then a couple a month for several months, but don’t get ahead of yourself. The most important are those first ten.

The more in communication you are with your new prospects, the more you allow them to get to know you, the more they will want to do business with you. The more you do business with them, the more money you’ll make. The more money you make… you get the idea.

When you add emails to your autoresponder series, in 1ShoppingCart, you tell it how many days after their signup to send each mail. Day 0 goes out immediately. Day 1 goes out one day later, day 2, two days later, etc.

In Aweber, you tell it how many days from the last email sent that it will go out. So you start with immediate, then have each email go out 1 day later.

Here are the emails that we recommend that you put in your series…

Ten Emails in Ten Days

Day 0 Thank your prospect for wanting the free stuff you have for them and give them a link to where they can go to get it, or instructions on how to get it. It is also a good idea to let them know they can ask you questions by replying to the email. Being in communication with your customers is the surest way to gain their trust.

Day 1 Give them a paragraph or two of information about your subject. Let them know by this that you will be giving them a lot of value. They will want to keep opening the emails you send them. If your free giveaway is an information product, you can actually take these few paragraphs of content directly from that. How easy can it be?

Day 2 Send them a link to an article or a blog post you’ve written on the subject of your product or service. (Write a little about what they’ll learn in that article so they’ll want to click on the link.) Again, this will help them to get to know you. Another thing that has become popular is to send a link to a video you’ve made about your subject and posted on a site such as YouTube.

Day 3 Thank them again for getting the free information and give them a link to a product or service that you are selling, either your own or one you sell as an affiliate. It has been tested and found that having the link three times within the email is the most effective way. The purpose of this email isn’t to get them to purchase your product or service, it is to get them to click on the link to the sales page. Once they do that, the sales page will sell them on the product or service itself.

Day 4 Repeat Day 1 with a few new paragraphs of informational content and a reminder that they can ask you questions.

Day 5 Repeat Day 2 with a link to a different article, blog post or video.

Day 6 Send them a link to the same product as you did on Day 3 or to a different one in a related area. (For instance, if you are selling quilting products, don’t suddenly send them to a page selling wine. It will confuse them and they won’t trust you much anymore.)

Day 7 Repeat Days 1 and 4 with a few more paragraphs of information.

Day 8 Repeat Days 2 and 5 with a link to yet another article, blog post or video.

Day 9 Repeat Days 3 and 6 with links to either the same or a related product or service you are selling or promoting.

There. That’s it. Ten emails. (Remember, we started with “0″.) By the end of ten days, your prospect will have a sense of who you are and what you have to offer them. You will also have begun to build trust with them. After that, keep in touch with them periodically with more information and links, interspersed with links to products you’re selling that you think they’ll get benefit from. They get great stuff. You get to sell your great stuff. How easy is that?

Start with at least four or five of these, then keep adding to the series until you have those first ten. Then, a great idea to add to the series is to take broadcasts you’ve already sent, adjust them so they aren’t time or date specific, and put them in the follow – up queue. This way, new people can get the same great info and offers as the people who are already on your list.

Many people have autorepsonder series that last for as long as a year or more. You probably don’t want to have one every day at that point. As we said earlier, once you’ve put the first ten in your autoresponder series, you can expand out that to a couple a week for the next several months, then a couple a month for several months. The most important are those first ten.

The next page is a “cheat sheet” you can print out and keep handy. After that, as promised, more on affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing 2 – The Sequel!

Last week, we started looking at affiliate marketing and where to find products you might want to offer. This week, we’ll look at some of the strategies you might use for your affiliate marketing. Some marketers start out as affiliate marketers and do so well, then never create their own products.

Many people start their online career with affiliate marketing, then move into creating their own programs. We recommend, however, even when you do start creating your own products and programs, that it’s a good idea to continue marketing other people’s things. This can be a great, steady income stream to supplement what you are making with your own projects.

Affiliate Marketing Strategies

In terms of finding great products to promote, think about what products you might create in your niche. Go out and see if someone has already created that product. When you find something, buy it and try it. If you love it, offer it to your people with your recommendation.

Eventually, you will begin to find people in your niche who are creating products that you trust. Keep up with them so you can promote new things that they come out with. (Remember, don’t buy things with your own affiliate link! Also, don’t trade affiliate links with friends! It’s stealing. It is both bad form and can get you banned from the affiliate program. If you’re banned, of course, you won’t make your commissions!)

Remember, this is not instantaneous. Very little online is, contrary to popular belief. You must develop your community. You must develop your relationship to that community. You must get their trust by speaking the truth, making yourself known, and only offering things you believe in.

When you offer something for sale, it’s not a one -time thing – if that something is “evergreen,” which means it doesn’t get old or out of date, put it on a marketing calendar and mail for it once a month or once a quarter. As you get more things to promote, you can do each one of them every few months.

When you do promote, don’t just put out one email. Promote it over several days, with different information, touting different benefits, etc.

This is a great strategy that you may notice Connie uses to great effect: Offer your people something of value as a bonus if they buy through your affiliate link. You can offer one of your own products or something you create from PLR. (Be careful. We have seen people giving OTHER people’s stuff away as a bonus without permission. This is a good way to get into a lot of trouble. Make sure you have permission to give something as a bonus before you do.)

A great bonus is a teleseminar, webinar or even one-on-one consultation. (And on those bonus teleseminars, webinars and consultations, it’s a good thing to have something else to promote to them besides giving them great content. It all adds up.)

Once you have found some products to promote, there are many ways you can promote them besides your email campaigns.

    1. Put links to affiliate products in your giveaways and products.

You may have noticed that a lot of the resources we’ve told you about over the last several weeks are affiliate products. This is a great way to give your customers and clients extra value and yourself some extra income. We love it when everyone wins.

    2. On your blog

Write blog posts about the products you ’ve used, perhaps with honest reviews, perhaps with hints on how to best use the products. Include affiliate links in the post.

(Remember to let people know that you are using affiliate links and that, if they purchase after clicking on your link, you will make a commission. You can do this in a “footnote” on your post, in your footer, or on a specific page or widget on your blog. Note that we have it at the top of every resource page.)

You can also have ads to affiliate products on your blog sidebar and on a special “resources” page.

    3. With article marketing

Although on most of the article marketing directories, you can’t have an affiliate link in the article or in your resource box. However, you can have a link to a domain that you own that you’ve redirected to your affiliate link. This is a powerful strategy.

    4. What ideas do you have?

Seeing these ideas, you can probably think of more yourself.

      A Word About Affiliate Links

Most of the time, your affiliate links will look fairly ugly, with question marks and odd code in them. Some of them can also be very long, which makes it hard to put into emails. We recommend using a shortening service. There are several you can use, such as http://budurl.com, http://tinyurl.com and http://bit.ly but we both use a great took called pretty link.

Pretty link is a free WordPress plugin. It makes managing your affiliate links very easy. You can track how many clicks you’ve gotten, you can organize them into groups and much more. We recommend getting a domain just for that purpose, perhaps with your name in it or your company name, such as johnnyloves.me or cindyrecommends.info. Load WordPress on that site, then load in Pretty Link. (You can find it here: http://jcpmarket.com/prettylink – yes, that’s a Pretty Link!)

You can name your links things that make it easy to remember, such as cindyrecommends.info/lightscamera or johnnyloves.me/prettylink

You also can use your links for anything that has a long web address, such as blog posts or articles. In case anyone stumbles on that site, it’s a good idea to have the front page just say something like, “Thanks for dropping by. There’s not much here. This site is mainly used as a link shortener for Fred Flintstone .” Then list links to your blog and/or other sites they might visit.

        Action Steps

Decide which blog posts or articles you will be sending people to in your autoresponder series.

Decide which product or products you will be promoting.

Write at least the first five autoresponder emails and load them into your email service. Plan on getting all ten finished within the next week or so.

Continue looking for affiliate products to promote

        Next week:

We will be looking at ways to drive traffic to your site.
