Choosing a Niche

There are lots of different ways to approach finding your niche, but for the purposes of this course, we will suggest 6 areas with some sub-areas underneath them. Choose one of these. Don’t worry if it is the wrong one.

We will use that niche during this 6 month course. If it turns out it wasn’t what you want to focus on in your online business, the wonderful thing is that, just like in Hollywood, you can re-write the ending or do a re-make in a different genre!

Here are the 6 areas to choose from:

Let’s look at each one of these and break them into smaller bits:

Relationship

As we mentioned, the category of “relationship” is fairly broad. If this is what you are interested in pursuing, here are some sub niches to choose from:

Even these can be broken down further, but be careful you don’t get carried away to the Point that there are only 4 people on the planet who your niche would apply to! If you’ve decided your niche will be relationships between the children of families who have more than one dog and live in the suburbs of Fairbanks, Alaska, you might want to rethink it a little.

Business

Some possible sub niches for focusing on business people:

Of course, you can also break these down a little. Women Entrepreneurs can be broken down to women over 40 starting a new business. Marketing a business online can be broken down to marketing local businesses online. You get the picture.

Home and Family

This is another area where it would be difficult to list all the possibilities. As mentioned above, pets could be “rescue pets” or even more specifically, “rescue dogs.” Also, with pets, people who have specific kinds of pets love to find out information about them. Just ask anyone with a Persian cat or a Lhasa Apso dog. And if you prefer the scarier type movies, lots of people keep snakes and lizards and tarantulas and they love them, also!

And think of all the possibilities with keeping up the garden: Roses, Japanese Maple trees, orchids. The list is endless.

Even these can be broken down further, but be careful you don’t get carried away to the Point that there are only 4 people on the planet who your niche would apply to! Health and Fitness

This is a very powerful niche, and a very profitable one, but know that, when you get into any area regarding health you must be very cautious about the specific claims you make. We don’t want you promising you can teach someone to be the Green Lantern.

Sports and Hobbies

In this niche, you can choose any specific sport or hobby. Here are a just few:

Do you love scale model trains and know a lot about them? Then you know there are a lot of people out there that went to know more about them. Crocheting and knitting is an area where people are clamoring for information. If you know a lot about either of them, or know where to get that information, this would be perfect for you. They wouldn’t have made the movie “How to Make an American Quilt” unless there were a lot of people out there making them!

Personal Development

This niche is wide open, so be careful. Choosing “Personal Development” as is would be sort of like sitting down to watch the entire Harry Potter series in one evening.

Doing Research

Once you have narrowed your choices down to only one or two, there are ways to find out what people are actually looking for information on. The first is the Google Keyword Planner, which you can find here (you will need a Google AdWords account, but it is free to sign up for one):

Once you are in that tool, put the name of your niche in the box at the top and see what keywords are suggested. (Keywords are simply the words or phrases that people type into Google and other search engines to search for things.)

You will get an idea from there how many people per month are searching for information in your chosen niche. If you click on the “Keyword Ideas” tab, Google will suggest other ideas for you. One good indicator that people are interested in spending money in that niche is how much people advertisers are paying for clicks on that keyword.

Once you’ve found some good keywords that people are searching for and that people are buying ads for, another great tool is SpyFu. You can find it here:

That tells you how much people in your niche are spending for their ads. If they are spending a few pennies per ad, it’s good, at least people buying. If they’re spending dollars, it’s even better because most businesses wouldn’t spend a lot for an ad unless they know they will get a good return on it!
